Reflections from the Whakaari/White Island volcanic explosion healthcare response
Compared with the usual 5 to 10 per cent survival rate from a volcanic eruption, the ultimate survival rate following the 2019 Whakaari/White Island explosion was about 53 per cent. As the clinical leader for burns at the New Zealand National Burn Centre, Dr Richard Wong She led the healthcare response to the explosion. He shared his reflections on the response at the recent ANMF (Vic Branch) Australian Nurses and Midwives Conference.
