In 2020, to mark the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife, Her Place Women’s Museum unveiled plans to launch an exhibition paying tribute to the nurses and midwives of Victoria. Following COVID-19 lockdown interruptions, the Unmasked: celebrating nursing and midwifery in Victoria and beyond exhibition finally opened for a limited run in 2021. Now it returns for a brief tour to Kyneton.
Unashamedly celebratory of nursing and midwifery’s achievements, the exhibition draws on 230 years of history and contemporary stories to acknowledge the immeasurable and collective contribution of nurses and midwives to Australian health care.
With a focus on Victoria, Unmasked highlights the multiple and diverse roles of nurses and midwives – in civilian and military life, in peacekeeping spheres, practice, politics, business, activism and advocacy.
Presented in partnership with the Department of Health and Safer Care Victoria, with support from ANMF (Vic Branch), the original Unmasked exhibition opened in March 2021 at Her Place Women’s Museum in East Melbourne. The exhibition was made possible with funding from the Victorian government.
A planned tour to Bendigo and regional art galleries later in 2021 was cancelled due to lockdowns, but a digital version of the exhibition was created to ensure it could be experienced by as many people as possible.
Now, thanks to Macedon Ranges Shire Council and Creative Victoria, a bespoke version of the physical exhibition will be on display at Kyneton Town Hall, 129 Mollison Street, from Friday 8 March until Friday 31 May 2024. Entry is free.
The exhibition opening coincides with International Women’s Day, and will be marked by a celebratory opening night event from 6pm-8pm. It’s free, but bookings are essential.
