Nurses and midwives often encounter patients with alcohol and other drug (AOD) addiction issues, which is why it’s important to have an evidence-based and compassionate understanding of addiction issues, withdrawal and treatment.
The ANMF Education Centre continues its offerings for members with AOD masterclasses and webinars. These are suitable for all nurses and midwives in any setting.
- 16 March: Alcohol: an online masterclass for nurses working in the AOD sector
- 24 March: The Womens Alcohol and Drug Service: Opioids and methamphetamine in the perinatal period
- 30 March: Benzodiazepines, GHB & cannabis: an online master class for nurses working in the AOD sector
- 1, 8, 15, 22 May: AOD webinar for nurses and midwives – series two

Assistant Secretary Madeleine Harradence says that the AOD education courses are part of the Branch’s strong commitment to AOD nursing and midwifery workforce development.
‘This work is even more vital after listening to the coroner’s findings into the death of Veronica Nelson.’
‘All healthcare workers regardless of setting need to develop an evidence-based and compassionate understanding of addiction issues, withdrawal and treatment.’
ANMF (Vic Branch)’s AOD training project, which began in 2016 in partnership with Turning Point and Monash University, has trained 3,256 nurses and administered 40 scholarships towards the Graduate Certificate in Addictive Behaviours. Applications for those scholarships open in August.
