Western Health and Djerriwarrh merge

Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital

Djerriwarrh Health Service and Western Health have amalgamated.

The two health services announced in March 2021 their intention to amalgamate, based on ‘clear community benefits’ and the Victorian Government agreed to the merger in June 2021.

Under the amalgamation, Western Health, which includes Footscray, Sunshine and the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s hospitals, has taken over management of the Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional hospitals, Grant Lodge Aged Care and community health centres in Bacchus Marsh, Melton and Caroline Springs.

In a joint statement released in March 2021, the health services committed to no reductions in overall health staffing numbers and no losses to frontline clinical staff.

They also stated that:

  • Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital will continue to operate as a community-based hospital.
  • Grant Lodge residential aged care at Bacchus Marsh will be retained.
  • Clients and patients will continue to have choice as to where they access care.

The Victorian Government has committed $75m to purchase land and plan a new hospital in Melton, which will be run by Western Health. The government has also allocated $5.5m. to redevelop the Grant Lodge Aged Care home.
