Personal care workers can now access free and confidential support and counselling through the Nursing & Midwifery Health Program Victoria (NMHPV).
With additional funding from the Andrews Government, the NMHPV service, which is run by nurses and midwives, has been extended to personal care workers. Since 2006 the NMHPV has been available to nurses, midwives, and student nurses and midwives.
ANMF (Vic Branch) staff phoned aged care members in the 456 Victorian private and not-for-profit aged care facilities within Melbourne and Mitchell Shire on 24, 25 and 26 July (during the Stage 3 lockdown) to enquire after their wellbeing and need for assistance.
ANMF understands that many personal care worker members are experiencing significant stress – particularly those working in private aged care where the vast majority of the COVID-19 outbreaks have occurred.
While ANMF is providing support to members for industrial and professional issues related to COVID-19, NMHPV offers a safe space to personal care workers to discuss mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, alcohol and substance use issues, and family violence. The NMHPV can also refer you to specialist services if necessary.
