Bettina Chapman has worked in perinatal mental health for more than 25 years. Over that time she has seen a number of changes ‘both in patient acuity and complexity, and staffing profiles and numbers’.

Bettina became a Job Rep many years ago ‘when our then union organiser called a meeting to advise us that our ward was entitled to some additional staffing but there needed to be Job Reps in order to facilitate this. A couple of us jumped at the chance, despite not really understanding what the role entailed – but keen to improve care for our patients, and conditions for our colleagues.’

The workload as a Job Rep varies somewhat, Bettina says, but as there are three Job Reps on the ward they are able to share the load.

‘The majority of the time there isn’t much of a workload: it’s just about being available to listen to the concerns of our colleagues, and either assist where possible or direct them back to the ANMF for assistance.’

Additionally, Bettina says she keeps an eye on staffing levels to monitor that they are being met as per the EBA; updates the ANMF information board in the staff area; and briefly and gently encourages new staff and students to become ANMF members.

‘I don’t place any pressure on myself to be an expert on the EBA, and always find the union organiser to be extremely helpful and supportive when I need some extra guidance. The training I’ve received from the ANMF has more than equipped me for the role; and I’m not expected to handle workplace bullying cases.’

Being a Job Rep has enabled Bettina to help protect nursing positions; assist with gaining additional staff and to ensure her colleagues feel heard and empowered. ‘The best thing, though, has been the feeling of connection, and of being part of an organisation that is passionate and committed to the health and wellbeing of nurses and the patients and families they care for.’
