Five tips for starting a new rotation

Just when you have become accustomed to the culture and work in your first grad rotation, it’s time to start another. It can be tough to start all over again, so here are some tips for helping you with the adjustment:

  1. Introduce yourself to your new colleagues as soon as you start. There may be many new staff commencing with you, so let others know you’re also new and in your grad year. These people will be valuable in helping you adjust to your new ward/unit. Ask them how the team works, such as organising their breaks, etc.
  2. Familiarise yourself with the layout. Hopefully you will be orientated to your new ward/unit but if not, scope out the pan room, storeroom, med room, linen closet, etc.
  3. Ask your new team if there is a specific shift planner for your new ward, this may assist you with time management if there are different processes or procedures. If not, there is always the ANMF shift planner available on our Diary App
  4. Keep asking questions! This is expected of all grads and new staff. If you’re unfamiliar with a task, or need help with anything, ask your in-charge, team leader or educator. No one expects you to know everything after one rotation. It is better to be upfront and request help early rather than risk making mistakes.
  5. Lastly, be kind to yourself. Every ward has its own idiosyncrasies, different personalities and ways of doing things. Being curious and open to change will help you navigate your new ward and hopefully you will be settled in no time.
