Accurate Riskman reporting supports safer workplaces. Job Reps and HSRs play an important role in role modelling good risk reporting practice and encouraging other staff to report OVA incidents when they occur and other OHS and clinical risks.
Key points
- Clinical and OHS incidents can overlap – report both where relevant (e.g. patient fall involving staff risk). Link incidents instead of duplicating.
- OVA includes any abuse, threats or assault toward staff. This includes racial abuse or harassment. Record clearly, include staff impact, and actions taken.
- Workload risks are OHS risks – document staffing vs demand, missed care, and escalation, even if no injury occurred.
- Complete Riskmans promptly, keep entries factual, and fill all mandatory fields. Always take note of the unique Riskman identifier number for your records.
- Use correct location/unit, add witnesses or documents, and escalate risks using the ‘Further Action’ function.
Key action
Report early, clearly and often. Riskman data supports safer staffing, highlights risks, and helps ensure employers meet their OHS obligations. If it’s not reported, it can’t be fixed.
Reporting OVA to ANMF
The ANMF provides an OVA incident reporting platform via the membership portal. Members are strongly encouraged to submit a report in addition to any made to their employer. While this may add to your workload, these reports are critical in helping the ANMF support members and achieve positive workplace outcomes.
For all OVA reports submitted, ANMF staff will contact the impacted member within 48 hours. This is to check on wellbeing, discuss the incident, and develop an action plan.
All enquiries contribute to a broader understanding of workplace issues, enabling the ANMF to develop strategies at both local and state levels. The ANMF values members’ trust and ensures confidentiality is maintained.
