Starting 1 July 2025, eligible student nurses and midwives will be able to access $331.65 per week (benchmarked to the single Austudy rate) while they’re undertaking a mandatory placement in a Bachelor or Master of nursing or midwifery.
ANMF lobbied hard to address placement poverty for our student members, and achieved the first clinical placement payments for students to get through up to 800 placement hours. It’s not perfect and the payment is mean tested, but it’s an important step in the right direction.
These payments will go some way to remove barriers and challenges reported by ANMF student members regarding the financial impacts of clinical placement including loss of income from their usual paid work and costs associated with clinical payment – including travel, accommodation, parking, childcare and mandatory uniforms.
On the eve of the recent federal election the Coalition announced that if elected they would turn the payments into a loan which would have further increased student debt.
ANMF will keep advocating for more support for student midwives and nurses – the future of our nursing and midwifery workforce.
