Celebrating International Day of the Midwife and International Nurses Day

We’re celebrating our growing workforce this International Day of the Midwife and International Nurses Day.

Monday 5 May – International Day of the Midwife

Monday 12 May – International Nurses Day

The December 2024 Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) registration figures show that the Victorian nurses and midwives’ workforce continues to grow to 133,369 – an increase of 37,695 on 10 years ago.

The ANMF (Vic Branch) is doing everything it can to improve pay and conditions so nurses and midwives can join and stay in the profession they love.

Last year members in the general public sector campaigned and won an EBA outcome that retains, recruits and rebuilds the workforces with a 28.4% wage increase over the next four years, plus more than 70 improvements including new and improved allowances. The public sector EBA is a benchmark for other negotiations, and private acute members are starting to see pay parity in two and three-year agreements with further uplifts to be negotiated in the next round.

ANMF has also secured improved ratios including postnatal night shift midwife-to-patient ratios of 1:4 – down from 1:6 in Level 4 (metro load sharing), 5 and 6 services under the Safer Care Victoria Maternity Capability Framework, 1:1 AM ratio in resuscitation cubicles in ED and enshrining 1:1 ICU ratios and other key ICU roles in legislation.

As we continue standing up for our nurses and midwives, lets also take this opportunity to celebrate your amazing contributions.
