The ANMF (Vic Branch) Education Centre’s new maternity program, created and presented by the Royal Women’s Hospital Maternity Services Education Program (MSEP), is up and running.

MSEP is a state-wide clinical education program that aims to improve the maternity outcomes of women and their babies through the provision of interprofessional education, supportive partnerships and capacity building.

In May, MSEP delivered the inaugural Emergency Birth program at the ANMF’s Education Centre, led by Genevieve Cason and Nicole Terry, midwives from the Royal Women’s clinical education team. The course gave participants the knowledge and skills to care for a woman through spontaneous labour and birth no matter the setting, as well as manage the common emergencies that can occur during birth.

Nicole and Genevieve wanted to reach nurses who don’t regularly work in the maternity care space. ‘Babies can be born anywhere – so we want to be prepared to provide the best quality care no matter where you’re working,’ said Nicole.

One hundred per cent of attendees rated the course as very good or excellent, with participants particularly valuing the hands-on experience in a simulated maternity environment.

The Emergency Birth program will be facilitated again on:

Next up on the ANMF (Vic Branch) Education Centre’s MSEP calendar is the Antenatal Care program. The course includes in-depth presentations, hands-on skill stations, simulation activities with an emphasis on supporting continuity of care, cultural safety, family centred practice and shared decision making.

This two-day program covers models of care, core practices in pregnancy care, routine maternal health investigations, common pregnancy conditions, psychosocial screening, maternal and fetal clinical assessments, lifestyle considerations, consultation and referral.
