ANMF (Vic Branch) has once again been recognised for its environmental leadership, being named a 2024 CitySwitch Champion.

It is just the latest in a list of CitySwitch wins for the Branch, including:

  • 2021 Victorian State Award for Businesses > 2000sqm
  • 2018 CitySwitch Hall of Fame inductee
  • 2017 CitySwitch State Signatory of the Year
  • 2014 CitySwitch Victorian State Award

The 2024 awards were announced on 12 June 2025.

What is CitySwitch?

CitySwitch is a national sustainability program, run by city councils, designed to help office-based businesses to enhance energy efficiency and reduce costs and waste, while working towards a decarbonised future.

The program was founded in 2005 and initially focused on increasing the energy efficiency of city-based offices. The program has since expanded to support businesses on their entire journey to net zero emissions.

The Branch has been a signatory to the program since 2013. As part of this, we report annually on our water and energy use and emissions at our Melbourne office.

When it comes to the annual awards, we’re up against strong competition: other participants include businesses that exist solely to further sustainability and climate action – such as the Green Building Council Australia, sustainability consultants CarbonNeutral, ClimateClever and ClimateZero, and state and federal government departments including Victoria’s Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action.

The Branch’s participation in the program is in part due to a resolution passed at the 2012 Delegates Conference. The original motion, submitted by delegates on behalf of their colleagues at Barwon Health, read:

That this conference request that the ANF (Vic Branch) explore the need to be more involved in policy debate on climate change and environmental issues.

Since then we’ve been leading the way, with the employment of a dedicated Environmental Health Officer and the establishment of initiatives such as the Green Nurses and Midwives Facebook Group, our Nursing for the Environment intensive CPD course and the annual Health and Environmental Sustainability Conference.
